Andros: top 3 “must visit” destinations

A 3 day trip guide to Andros island

Gavrio is Andros island main port

Andros is just two hours away from the port of Rafina, by boat. Everyday, there are several itineraries depending on the season. The boat arrives at Gavrio, the island’s commercial port which is very small (actually, just a dock) and serves mainly for the movement of people and trucks to the rest of the island. You can grab a coffee from cafe Eftihia and hit the road. Our trip, is just for two to three days. Nonetheless, Andros is a wonderful island, so big that you can stay for a couple of weeks and never get bored. There are many old villages, museums and monasteries worth visiting, most having a long history. In summer there are different art exhibitions and music concerts, church feasts and fairs. An example is the sausage feast which takes place every October where you can see how the famous Andros sausages are prepared while drinking lots of barrel wine under the local sounds of folk music.

Batsi is a picturesque fisherman's village in Andros

First stop at Batsi that is a small picturesque fisherman’s village by the sea surrounded by small houses and hotels. It is worth visiting for a swim and an ouzo, gazing the dazzling Aegean.

Korthi's main square in Andros

Our destination is Korthi which lays at the south part of the island. A very picturesque village, worth walking through after having an early dinner at one of the various tavernas and restaurants. But before that, you need to start with a swim. You can swim at Korthi’s local beach or choose the more adventurous and famous, “tis grias to pidima” (“της γριάς το πήδημα¨) which translates to “the jump of the old lady”. A sandy beach with a unique character and amazing, emerald waters, approximately 10 minutes away with a little walking on foot, involved. There are three different myths that explain the peculiar name of this beach. Fact is that if you look at the 15 meters high cliff emerging from the sea, from a specific angle, you can picture a very old lady with a scarf covering her head.

Remnants of the Venetian castle

Chora(or Andros)

After a long day in Korthi, you take another picturesque route that goes to Chora(or Andros) where you can stay for the night at Paradise hotel ( Chora is the capital of the island. It is completely different from the Chora of other Cycladic islands since it is the birthplace of many shipowners and captains and has a luxurious and cosmopolitan flair with large neoclassical, aristocratic houses. A walk through the alleys exploring the wonderful houses, the churches and the “platίes” (the public squares) is an absolute must. Do not forget to try a Greek coffee and glyκό tou koutaliou(spoon sweet) at one of the coffee shops under the plain trees. Chora ends at Riva square where you find the statue of the silent sailor and remnants of the Venician castle.

Near Chora there are two wonderful, sandy beaches you can swim and then have lunch or dinner. The most impressive and less crowded of the two is Paraporti. It has a breathtaking view to the Chora peninsula, the lighthouse Tourlitis (Faros Tourlitis) and the deep blue of the Aegean. For a meal, always choose a taverna by asking where the locals eat, or by looking for the most crowded taverna or restaurant (not by tourists).
